Founded in 1993 by Winy Maas, Jacob van Rijs, and Nathalie de Vries, in Rotterdam, Netherlands, MVRDV focuses on providing innovative solutions to contemporary architectural and urban challenges on a global scale. Their projects exemplify a smart approach that guides cities and landscapes toward a better future.
.
MVRDV is deeply committed to fundamental research in urban landscapes, public spaces, and the impact of architecture on daily life. Their research-based design approach drives innovation and creativity in architecture, urban design, and landscape architecture, with a particular emphasis on integrating social and environmental spaces. They always investigate site constraints and social, cultural, economic, and environmental issues, making them a valuable asset in the design, evaluation, and optimization of short-term conditions. Every design is born out of in-depth analytical research, yet challenges existing thinking and seeks optimized and exciting solutions.
MVRDV‘s rational design approach has led to the completion of over 600 projects. Their design methodology is based on research into data and information available in the surrounding space, as well as the constraints of the site. These constraints shape the process of contemporary architectural design. By understanding and defining the right strategy for using this data, MVRDV has discovered highly conscious and specific solutions that not only meet the needs of today and tomorrow but also enable them to simulate future scenarios. The benefits of this scientific approach include the invention of a design method from the design process to the architectural product, and the production of solutions with software programs and broad urban planning perspectives.
Their modeling allows for the discovery of multiple design options through extensive testing to improve known design solutions. The result is a refined design that allows for the highest quality of design to be evaluated. MVRDV uses diagrams, physical model simulations, and many other media to research site design and client needs.
The design process is extensive for all projects, from object design to urban landscape development. They operate as a network of experts who interact closely with clients. MVRDV works extensively in its studio through flexible groups and collaborates with numerous consultants and experts outside the studio, including sociologists, programmers, engineers, and artists. This strong collaborative model fosters a dialectical environment that results in projects reaching their ultimate evolution. This evolution is the foundation for achieving excellent design results.
Other areas of activity for MVRDV include urban landscape design, publishing numerous publications, and organizing various exhibitions. Some of the completed projects include: the Netherlands Pavilion at Expo 2000 Hanover, a market with a mix of housing and retail space in Rotterdam, an office building with sustainable environmental priorities in Paris, the Eindhoven Innovation Park, the Silodam residential complex in Amsterdam, and more.
By conducting extensive research on issues related to global sustainability patterns such as “pig city,” MVRDV has developed small-scale and practical architectural solutions for devastated areas like New Orleans.
MVRDV‘s designs have been exhibited and published worldwide. The group has received numerous international awards. One hundred and fifty architects and urban designers develop projects in a collaborative and multidisciplinary process involving detailed technical and creative research. MVRDV, together with the Delft University of Technology, has established an independent research institute that provides guidelines for architecture and urban design by predicting future cities.
